The Inhabitants of Orchard Edge

Prior to the development of Orchard Edge, (which incorporates the Iwade Medical Centre) by both Hillreed and Ward Homes, archaeological evidence of habitation was found by Pre-Construct Archaeology. Test excavations of both these sites found evidence of Late Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age, Roman, Saxon and Medieval occupation and usage.

In January and March 2000 during subsequent excavation of the sites, evidence of occupation was found, including post holes of round houses and other post structures, flint tools and a bronze Palstave Axe head were all discovered along with pottery from most of the periods, some medieval coinage, tools and dress accessories. Evidence of the killing and eating of animals, wildfowl and molluscs was also found.

The burial of a much loved dog was found with its body partially protected by a large piece of pottery. They obviously loved their animals then as we do!

There is a display of the site and its finds at the Sittingbourne Heritage Museum, (open Saturdays 10.0 – 4.00, who also hold the full archive of what was found on the site. Further information about this site and the excavation finds can be obtained by calling Phil Talbot on 01795 426557.

A publication dedicated to Iwade can be purchased from the Pre-Construct site here
